How to Uninstall
Firefox Search Engines

It's not the easiest thing in the world, but these directions should get you through it...
(note: you can try the SearchPluginHacks Firefox plugin, which allows you to right-click (or control-click on a Mac) Search Engines to delete them, but as of 1/10/06, it's still a little buggy)

Mac OS X - Linux - Windows

Mac OS X

    For Firefox Version 1.5:

  1. In your Home directory, navigate to Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/
  2. In the Profiles Folder, there should be a folder that ends in ".default". (If you have multiple profiles, be sure to select the correct one)
  3. Inside that folder you should open a folder called "searchplugins".

    For Versions earlier than 1.5:

  1. Find the Firefox application (usually installed in your Applications folder)
  2. Control-click (or right-click) on the Firefox application, and choose 'Show Package Contents' from the contextual menu
  3. Navigate through to Contents/MacOS/searchplugins
  4. For all versions:

  5. In the 'searchplugins' folder, you'll see two files for each Firefox Search Engine you've added. (an image and a .src file). Be sure to get rid of both of them for each of the Search Engines you want to remove

Linux

  1. Find the 'searchplugins' folder, which should be in $HOME/.mozilla
  2. In the 'searchplugins' folder, you'll see two files for each Firefox Search Engine you've added. (an image and a .src file). Be sure to get rid of both of them for each of the Search Engines you want to remove

Windows

    For Firefox Version 1.5:

  1. Navigate to your Firefox Profiles directory (usually C:\Documents and Settings\<YOUR USERNAME>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\)
  2. There should be a folder that ends in ".default"; inside it you should open the searchplugins folder (if there are multiple ".default" folders, you may have to look in more than one. These represent different user profiles you have created in Firefox)
  3. For Versions earlier than 1.5:

  4. Find the directory where the Firefox application is installed (usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\)
  5. Inside the Mozilla Firefox folder, find the 'searchplugins' folder
  6. For all versions:

  7. In the 'searchplugins' folder, you'll see two files for each Firefox Search Engine you've added. (an image and a .src file). Be sure to get rid of both of them for each of the Search Engines you want to remove

  8. (Thanks to Xerxes Dynatos for the headsup on the Firefox 1.5/Windows fix)
